Our knife factory in Mora!
A Morakniv is always made in Mora, in our factory in the village of Östnor, where it’s been located for centuries. We have control over the entire production, as it’s we who carry out each step of the process. Making extremely good knives is a complicated process. During the last 125 years we have learned a great deal about how we can get the best possible results.
Every step in the process, from the start in the pressing hall to the finishing line in dispatch, has a unique role. From steel to knife
7000 knife blades an hour
Everything starts in the pressing hall. When a knife is constructed, we select the steel that best matches what the knife will be used for; carbon steel, stainless steel or laminated steel. Two knife blades a second are made in the pressing hall. That adds up to a huge 7,000 blades an hour! The power in the press is 120 tons.
A well-kept secret
The steel is treated to make it harder, tougher and increase edge resiliency. We use two different hardening furnaces: one for stainless steel and one for carbon steel. The actual hardening process is a company secret, as that’s the factor which gives our knives the steel’s unique qualities – such as sharpness, strength and flexibility.
The blade gets its final shape during grinding – spine, side and edge grinding. The characteristics of the final knife determine how we grind the different knife models. Every year we grind more than 3 million knives, and more than 90% of these are ground in an automated facility.
Razor sharp finish
The blade gets its final finish during polishing. First, each blade gets a basic polishing before the final glossing gives the knife blade its shiny surface. After polishing, the blades are razor sharp so they have to be handled extremely carefully through the rest of the process. We check and document the sharpness continuously to guarantee that every Morakniv is super sharp. Our polishing machines polish more than 10,000 knives every day.
Handles and sheaths
The handles are made both manually and automatically through injection molding. The sheaths are also injection molded. Liquid material is heated to over 200°C and is then injected into a mold where it cools down and sets.
Craftsmanship lives on
All knives with a wooden handle are assembled by hand – just like when we started in 1891. The classic red knife gets its handle here; as do our woodwork knives, hoof knives, and the popular kitchen knives in the Classic 1891 range. Hand-assembled knives make up about 10% of our production. The handle is mostly glued to the knife blade, but in some cases it is clamped in.
“Egglund” & “Gabriel” deliver
In our automated production units, “Egglund” and “Gabriel”, several of our handicraft and outdoor knives are managed. The handle is made of different polymers that give it a hard core covered by a soft friction grip. The result is a robust knife that sits both safely and comfortably in your hand. The maximum capacity is 980 knives per hour.
Our packaging is designed and constructed in line with our customers’ requirements and we work with everything from store and gift packages to multipacks and display stands. Once the knives are packed, they are warehoused while awaiting delivery. Our most popular knives are placed strategically so they can quickly be fetched when a customer places an order. We do all we can to improve our service and our ability to deliver on time.
